The 12-volume History of Middle-earth is so named not because it presents the entire history of Middle-earth but because it presents the history of the evolution of Middle-earth. Tolkien's son Christopher has dedicated his life to analyzing, chronicling, organizing, and publishing his father's notes, writings, ideas, and occasionally scribbles.
